The Stag

In Celtic mythology, the stag holds a revered and powerful position, embodying various symbolic meanings and associations. The stag represents strength, virility, and nobility. It is often seen as a creature of the wilderness, embodying the untamed and primal forces of nature. In particular, the stag is closely linked to Cernunnos, the Horned God of Celtic mythology. Cernunnos himself is depicted with antlers or adorned with a stag's head, signifying his affinity with this majestic creature. As the Horned God, Cernunnos is associated with fertility, abundance, and the cycle of life. His connection to the stag symbolizes his dominion over the wild and his role as a guardian of the animal kingdom. The stag and Cernunnos are intertwined, representing the sacred masculine energy, the vitality of the natural world, and the cyclical rhythms of existence. The stag's image serves as a reminder of the deep connection between humans and the wild, and the harmonious balance between humanity and the animal realm.

The Holly

The Holly is sourced from near Drumkeeran, Co. Leitrim, Ireland, within walking distance of ancient sacred sites. An offering is given to the trees for each piece that is cut and prayers are sung to the forest.

Holly symbolises protection, rebirth, strength, and authority. It is associated with warding off negativity and safeguarding against malevolent forces. Holly's evergreen nature represents the cycle of life, death, and rebirth, while its resilience embodies the ability to endure challenges. Additionally, Holly is revered for its association with leadership and nobility, symbolizing wisdom and dignity. Overall, Holly holds significant symbolism in Celtic culture, representing protective energies, the eternal cycle of life, resilience, and leadership qualities.

Sustainability

At Heron Drums, we work with natural materials and animal hides - this way the strength and the spirit of the animal and the tree live on in these sacred medicine tools. All of the hides and woods for our shamanic medicine tools are ethically and sustainably sourced, meaning that the hides are sourced from horses that have died naturally or wild culled stags or reindeer, where the hides are otherwise discarded, and the wood for the sticks is from sustainably managed forests.
